The hit tv show, Modern Family brings you into the life of three very different families, all unique in their own ways. There is one family that sticks out the most, and that is the relationship of Cameron and Mitchell. Their family truly develops the idea of a “modern family”, where the same gender can happily get married and have a family of their own. There holds no restrictions on what a normal family is because the modern family is what it wants to be.
Yet if this
show were to take place say 40 years ago when the LGBT community was ridiculed largely
due to the outbreak of the HIV virus that was believed to be caused by
homosexual activities, Mitchell and Cameron would be living a much different lifestyle.
Afraid to share their relationship with the world, they each appear to be
single to their family and friends but secretly are seeing each other. If
anybody were to know about it, terms like “gay cancer” would be thrown at them,
including other forms of mockery that would just be unbearable. Although they
so badly want to get married and start their own family, the law and society just
won’t allow it. The only one who knows about the relationship is Mitchell’s
sister, Claire who is the most understanding and can keep the secret; especially
from their father, Jay who would be far from sympathetic. Sadly without the
support from friends and family, the relationship does last very long as it
becomes too difficult to continue; they both part their separate ways and Cameron
is taken off the show. Mitchell although not following his heart ends up
marrying a woman his father sets up for him.
