I wanted to do a twist to the television series Gossip Girl, the show gained a lot of momentum as the world was picking up on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook for updates and relationship statuses. This made me realize how over-consumed we are with media, there are obvious pro’s and con’s to the constantly-changing platforms from Facebook to Instagram to Snapchat (etc.) but there is little to no consent anymore on how we can perceive ourselves through media and creating that fake environment of friendship and like buttons. Series like TMZ and magazines sources over popularize reporting on gossip, specifically celebrity gossip to close the gap between "them" and regular people. Creating this imaginary barrier between the rich and famous and working class people is a problem to how society communicates today and in the future. Better yet if you are not caught up with any platforms, “its just weird”.
Gossip Girl highlighted the most privileged students living in New York and a protagonist in the lower middle class that gets to peer into their lavish lives. I changed the locale, ethnicity and social class of the characters. Serena is a Mexican who gained a residency in America and Blair is an African-American, both living on the Lower East side, similarly to the timeframe of the show, gentrification continued to sweep through places like Canary Street and Chinatown. I had to look back at the discrepancies of an average income before and after gentrification of the location and the percentage hike and in the area, it varies from 18.1% to 78.7%. Gentrification continues to remove families from their homes in order to create a place for new jobs and real estate development.
I made the main character a Mexican-American due to being one of the several increasingly targeted group of people especially during this years political race. Personally being of hispanic background, stereotypes are a given when skin color is brought into the mix of understanding identity.
