What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
I am responding to the prompt which asked to pick a commercial and write my own ekphrasis in response to the advertisement. I chose a very well-known commercial about Direct TV. The advertisement put a lot of emphasis on the audience to switch from Cable TV to Direct TV through a creative personal story of a man who had Cable TV. This man's cable went out and a series of unfortunate events barraged him resulting as a consequence of not having Direct TV.
What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?
I used YouTube to obtain the commercial. I found this commercial because it was a very well-known advertisement since they have many other commercials following the same theme of a guy going through a series of unfortunate events due to the fact he has Cable TV. Direct TV is a huge cable company that airs these commercials several times a day.
Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
YouTube is a very convenient utility since you can basically search and find any video you want. It will give you many links to the certain clip you are looking for and shows very clear visual works.
What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
I chose this commercial because it was brought to my attention every time it has aired. It is a very funny and creative way to sell their product. I find it very entertaining how they have a different story for every commercial they put out and it follows the same theme. The way they film each sequence the man goes through is very visual, clear, and simple to understand what is happening. Watching this advertisement feels like you are in the film, living and feeling the man's sad life.
What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
I learned that commercials can have as big of an impact on a certain issue as a Netflix show/movie. Although these films are relatively short, they are very straight to the point and make sure the audience knows what is happening in the simplest way possible to get them to buy their product. I also learned about ekphrasis and that it can be used in a variety of ways. Just taking a certain visual work and portraying it in your own words and descriptions.
