Ryan Smith: Week 1 Analysis

Week 1 Analysis
Ryan Smith

Based on the reading, Disindentifications I chose to explore the relationship of Mitchell and Cameron in the well-known tv show, Modern Family. I am responding to the concern of expressing who you truly are beneath the explicit identifications society gives you. This led me to choose this specific medium because of the accessibility it holds to the topic at hand. The tv show gives way to the potential of what it is to be a modern family, and the uniqueness it holds. I put Mitchell and Cameron’s relationship in a time period much different from now to show how much the show is forced to change. No longer can they openly express their love for each other because of the fear driven by a hateful and ignorant nation. This in turn ends up driving them away from each other because of how difficult the relationship becomes. Being in the world we live in today, although not perfect, we still see an overall acceptance of people to be who they want to be; putting this show back into a time period when it seemed all were against the minority group taught me to appreciate how far we’ve come as a nation, but how much still has to be done.
