What themes or concerns in the presented reading are you responding to?
The themes I had tried to respond to were the "straight to the point" details in Unexplained Presence and Straight Photography. I decided to do so because I knew a response like this was a challenge for me. Trying to incorporate my thoughts into a more poetic and artistic way is something I'm not very used to. I chose to use a picture taken of me at my senior year recital by my aunt. I had actually written a few responses and deleted them over and over again because the poetic nature of photography is not something very natural to me. I figured this type of response would get me to pay more attention to detail and recalling of certain things I may not have noticed in the moment. It challenged me to view a small portion of an experience in a more imaginative way.
What are the materials and processes you used to formulate you response? Why these?
The materials I used were the picture, recalling of detail, and thesaurus.com. I had to re-process this time of my life and what mindset I was in, in order to get the most accurate detail of how I felt during this time. I also tried very hard to change perspectives. I tried to be a member of the audience rather than the performer. I wanted to be an audience member that was very particular with detail. Someone that would notice the lighting, the tension, etc. This limited me to express how I actually felt during this time. However it allowed me to see what an audience would see. What could seem like such an insignificant moment to one person, could be a while life changing event for another, which is what I feel the audience could not tell from this picture.
What choices did you make?
I chose not to edit my picture at all. I didn't want to give any other vibe off other than a high school recital, cheap entertainment vibe. However, I also left it this way to show that even though a picture may look so simple, there is so much that can be said, or hidden from the viewer...thus incorporating my experience as the performer.
What did you learn through this response?
I learned a different way of formulating perspective points. I learned a different way to express detail rather than a "he/she looked like" or "he/she was wearing." It challenged me to expand my mind from a typical description to something more meaningful and magnified.
