Temi Omogunloye Week 5 Response & Analysis
Response
Analysis
1. What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
- I am responding to this week's assignment, which was to create a collage.
2. What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?
- I was initially inspired by this week's readings about Art and its ability to create a raw experience. The problem with raw experiences is sometimes the person gets lost trying to experience something he or she thinks the author wants them to experience, so instead, I put my message, the thing I want you to experience, in your face.
- The limitation is the audience is treated like a child, having to deal with what I want directly. Yet at the same time, it allows time to pass, bypasses the whole "is this what the author wanted?" or "am I getting this right?".
4. What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
- I chose music I thought would inspire. I picked pictures I thought would tug at the heart of any human,. I think I set the right time but I wasn't able to customize it that specifically. And finally I put cue words and phrases, (I.E. Smile, what does....).
5. What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
- I learned that I smile nearly too much but my smile is not rooted in all things good.
p.s. Sorry this is late, internet pls :-(
Olivia Clifford: Week 5 Analysis
What themes or concerns in the presented reading are you responding to?
I am responding to the prompt to make a video collage.
The theme I was going for in my video was to slow down and appreciate life.
What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?
I used iMovie, Photoshop, and YouTube. I used Photoshop to edit the photos in the video. I used iMovie to piece the video together. Finally, I used YouTube to showcase the video.
I was most concerned with iMovie mostly because I had never used it before.
Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
These materials were definitely the best things I could use to create my video. iMovie allowed me to put together a video in a smoother manner as compared to something like Microsoft Movie Maker (which I personally really do not like to use). Photoshop also allowed me to change the photos from their vibrant colors to black and white.
The limitation I faced definitely was my knowledge of how to use these programs (or lack there of). I only used Photoshop a few times and when I did use it, none of my photos were ever edited to look like masterpieces considering I didn't even know what to click on. This attempt worked out better, except when I ran into a few problems of the program not opening certain photos and had to call in my sister for help (since it was her Mac that I was using; I'm a PC gal). She then showed me that the Mac has a built in photo editor that was much simpler to use, especially since all I was doing was making the photos black and white.
This was my first time using iMovie. It was intimidating, considering all I had ever used in the past was Microsoft Movie Maker and this was way more complicated than that. I played around with it and figured out that it wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be.
What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
The first decision I had made was to incorporate only candid photos in my video. The theme I was focusing on to slow down and appreciate all that life has to offer. Candid photos capture what other photos do not: raw, pure emotions. The photographer was not telling the subject of the photo how to feel. Instead, they saw how the subject was feeling and snapped a photo. These photos are from the moments in life that we don't realize are being captured. In my video, the photos show how the subject(s) is truly enjoying their life.
The next decision I made was to make the photos black and white. I did this mostly to make all the photos flow well together in the video. Some pictures were taken on professional cameras while others were just on a camera phone. I wanted to make them all match despite the quality.
I also chose the song Vienna by Billy Joel for the video. I only used the first verse because the song is a little over 3 minutes long and I didn't want my video to be that long. This song talks about not going through life too fast, which I felt went well with my theme. At first, I had wanted to recite a poem as the background sound of the video, but I couldn't find a poem that I felt captured the vision I had for the video. I asked my sister to help me pick a song instead (she listens to much more music than I do) and she suggested this one.
I was very precise with how long each photo was shown in the video. I wanted it to match the song because I know that I get annoyed when photo changes don't match the song when watching a slide show. So each photo is not shown for the same length of time, but instead matches the flow of the music.
I was also very particular about picking the order of the photos. I tried to make it correlate with the lyrics. For example, when Billy Joel sings "slow down you crazy child" the picture that is being show is one of a person running.
I also made sure to have the music fade out at the end because I personally don't like when a song ends abruptly in a video. This took me a long time to figure out how to do but I eventually got it.
What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you've gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both).
This response taught me A LOT about iMovie. As I said before, it was my first time using the program but I learned so much just making a short 1-minute video. I also learned more about how to work a Mac. These skills will definitely help me when making my final video project.

Ryan Smith Week 5 Analysis
I am responding to photo collage presented in the reading on Romare Bearden
I used the photographs I have taken over the last two years and combined it with an acoustic version of Everlong
I chose these photos because they all represent the natural world, looking at these photos, along with taking them give me a sense of comfort and relaxation. The acoustic version of Everlong provides a soothing sound for me being it is one of my favorite songs and represents my appreciation of nature.
All of the photos generally are lively and colorful pictures that do their best to represent the beauty and diversity of nature.
I've learned the about the power of simplicity and the true quality it possess to appreciate a work of art that requires no complexity at all.

Life > Moving Forward > Sincerely > Honesty > Different > Face Self.
Life has progress that is not linear. Its unpredictability lives through the unexpected moves it creates. Through this video, a series of emotions are portrayed. As the poem flow, it gets more and more intense (just a spectacle of what my emotions go through on the daily). Driven by a factor and the world around me, I unleash different sides of me.
I am full of life and everything above and beyond it. Through this film, I exert some type of clue on what my thought process and perspectives are in life.

Josh Belmonte Week 5 Analysis
1. What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
I was inspired by the Bogota video because of its randomness. I used this assignment to show my common interests and personality through random pictures I have taken and found throughout the internet. I found this assignment entertaining because I was able to express myself creatively through pictures that are significant to my personal life.
2. What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?
I used google to search for pictures and my iPhone for photos I have taken in the past. I also used animoto, a website for generating videos.
3. Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
Google allows me to find any picture I want throughout the internet. It has a wide range of pictures to choose from making the process very easy. I also used animoto because it was free and I had no way of producing my own video with applications like iMovie and movie maker. The only limitation is that it was a free trial only.
4. What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
My tone for this assignment is very happy. The music is a mellow and positive tone. The pictures I chose are entertaining to me that sparks my interest.
5. What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
I learned how to use animoto. I used to use iMovie in high school but I do not have it downloaded so I was not able to use it. Animoto was very new to me although it was very easy to pick up and learn to use.

Arvin Smith Week 5 Analysis //
• What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
The concept of living forever, death and meaningfulness is addressed in my collage in a strange way. I decided to throw randomness and hints about living life forever. Since I read about it I have been taking Reservatol supplement pills (the substance found in red wine) and have had a goal of living as long as possible. I also had a cat before so I threw that in the collage as well and the idea of having 9 lives and living forever. The paint gave the idea of being poisoned.... bitter paint reminds me of that and the possibility of death. The goofy pictures are just there to give a sense of meaningfulness which I think went well with the text. This includes the short video of my hand eating nothing; it gives an example of meaningfulness due to the eating of the "universe" which is equated with nothing and the idea of being goofy and meaningfulness. The horse gives a sense of being content with the meaningfulness and the text "don't tread on me //" gives the idea of being strong and overcoming these thoughts of being irrelevant in this huge universe.
• What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?
I used my phone camera to take a short video of my hand and many pictures both taken TODAY and some taken from before (such as the cat and horse). I then used the app on my computer, IMOVIE to design the flow of the film and used a bubbly template for the gyst. I then added sound effects to the movie in total randomness to give an idea of this and some music made by friends to give a sense of a goofy vibe and an interesting spin.
• Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
These materials and processes give me a way to make a video in a collage fashion - sticking things together. It also allows for a mayhem vibe because IMOVIE has tons of sound effects and a great assortment of templates. My friend's music is strange and drives this theme even more. All in all, the theme I described above is amplified by these materials and processes - the crappy iphone camera just adds to this effect.
• What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
I chose a crazed, strange, trippy, WIERD tone. This was the purpose, to make people think abstractly about LIFE, about an impending DEATH and say "hey, well while life isn't really meaningful, WHO CARES. I'll still live my life like i'm very important". Everyone dies, but why not try to fight it..... why not try to keep on going and live it to the fullest, even if it ultimately may be a meaningless dot in a multiverse. The randomness and eccentricity of the video does a great job of this in my opinion.
• What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
I learned that I could actually make a video that is similar to some we have seen in class. I haven't used IMOVIE in a decade.... and I'm only 21, not to mention it changes decently every year. I figured it out while in my room, eating and was later able to stitch this monstrosity together. I got some inspiration from the randomness of the BOGOTA video and the existential crisis of a classmate's work (I believe it was Richard's week 3 response). I learned that I really do question my existence and while I may have already known this, this project made me think about it a little more, for the better Or for the worse. I don't really know.

James Cavallaro Week 5 Analysis
· What themes or concerns
in the presented reading are your responding to?
o
For
this weeks assignment I used the theme of using a collage of pictures from this
past year when I had went to Washington DC. They are in no particular order but
rather randomly placed into moviemaker. They are though a collage of some, not
all of the picture that I took while in Washington DC this past summer.
o
What
are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these?
If several, which are you most concerned with?
o
The
materials and processes I used to formulate my response was mostly moviemaker
to put all the images and music together. First I had to send the pictures from
my iPhone to my email, which I than downloaded them to my laptop and uploaded
them into moviemaker. My main concern was that the pictures were going to make
the file size to large and that I was not going to be able to upload my video…
and it did just that. The music behind the video is Black by Pearl Jam, one of
my favorites. Did necessarily choose this song for any reason other then I like
it.
· Why these materials and
processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
· The main limitation was
that I was only able to access the photos that I took which wasn’t that many.
My phone was dead for most of the trip therefore I couldn’t take as many as I
would have liked. My sister was the one to take more photos when we were in DC
but the photos where on her digital camera that she couldn’t get to me in time
to make this.
· What choices did you
make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions
for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
· What made me pick the
picture that I did for this collage was pretty simple. I took the picture that
stood out most to me, mostly the places that we spent the most time when we
were site seeing. My decision making about them was generally base on which
picture I felt came out the best and captured both the scene and atmosphere.
· What did you learn
through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained
regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
o
Its
been a long time since I last used movie maker so when I opened it for the
first time I had to refresh myself on the short cuts and way to move around the
program. I think that now I’ve been exposed to the program a little now, it
will make putting together my final project easier.

Moises Urena: Week 5 Analysis
1. What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
The theme I'm responding to is the collage theme. All the pictures in the reading were made up of different other pictures.
The materials I used were google, iMovie, my laptop, and, photoshop. I used google to search different images. Then I used photoshop to cut the image from the original image and posted it on the collage I was creating. Then I saved the collage between each image added and put it into iMovie. I was most concerned with using iMovie because I had never used it. I wanted to make sure the video came out how I pictured it in my head but I wasn't sure if it would since I didn't know how to do much on iMovie. I learned a couple basic things by randomly clicking and double clicking.
3. Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
I used photoshop because I'm very comfortable with it and knew how to maneuver within it. A limitation with photoshop is that I can't make the images move within photoshop. Since I couldn't, I used iMovie for that. I used iMovie to paste the images together separated by about a second. Each new scene added something new to the collage. The limitation of iMovie for me was that I couldn't figure out how to zoom in to where I wanted to at certain times.
4. What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
I chose to paste one new object new into each scene so it could be easier to follow. I also decided to work from one side of the screen to another side so it could also help with following along. If I would switch between the left and right of the screen to much than it would be a bit harder to follow.
5. What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
I learned how to do some things inside iMovie. I learned how to stop the scene from automatically zooming into shots. I also learned how to shorten or extend certain scenes. The most important but easiest thing I learned was how to add images to the movie.
WEEK 5 ANALYSIS by Jhadai McDonald
Her Mask is a short poem by Noble Smalls which I decided to interpret. Based on this week's assignment, I was prompted to film in mostly black and white because of the deep meaning that is implied by it. My film addresses the main theme in this weeks reading which is the tone of the pictures. Without even listening to the poem, I want viewers to recognize the depth of each image and what they bring to the video on a whole. To create this piece, I read a poem by an older man located on a website called, "poetry soup". I chose this website because it is a place of encouragement and growth, which is reiterated in the poet's bio. I therefore hope that my video demonstrates this philosophy. While making this video, besides filming in black and white, I wanted to use slow motion and a bit of upside-down imagery to stimulate the viewer's understanding of the piece: it is more meaningful than what one thinks it means. Finally, through this response, I've learnt more about beauty and that it is more than just outward appearance- it is skin deep.
Alec Monafis Week 5 Analysis
I am responding and recreating a similar theme of taking random photos or videos and making a collage that somehow makes sense. I have been making these 1 second everyday videos for the past 2 summers now. Its a cool way to remember what experiences and things you experienced when you just get too old to remember. I used myself and my own thoughts and opinions to formulate the camera angles and certain moods in each snippet of each day. I tried to use clips that were able to sum up the entire day in one second. This didn't always happen but the flow was still able to be continued, even with a few random unrelated videos. There is no limitation in these materials. In order to make something so amazing its all up to you. In order to make a short video so inspiring or shocking to another person or most importantly you, it's all up to how far you want to go to get that amazing footage. The choices I made involved selecting the right video for that one day. You are only able to select one video for one day, so any other recordings on that day would go to waste. You must choose the best video to best represent your feelings and experience for that day. I learned from this response that you can take anything in any way. How you see one picture or one video may totally be different from what another person may see. How one person connects to it emotionally may change when shown to a different person.

Georgeanne Casper: Week 5 Analysis
1.) What themes or concerns are you responding to?
I decided to respond to the prompt with Ariel Goldberg as my inspiration. Even thought Goldberg's photos had more of a hidden meaning, or rather a broad spectrum of ideas, I tried to go along with that but with a much more pinpointed topic. My topic being "Where the magic happens."
I took pretty generic photos to really get my point across.
2.) What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these?
The materials I used where my iPhone, iMovie, and my apartment. My thought process behind this video was to project the internal/external meanings of my apartment on Cook Campus. As seen in the video, most pictures are black and white, however some are in color. The black and white photos represent what any guest, or college student would observe in front of their eyes. However, the colored photos are places in college where creativity is really sparked. For example, my house mate was studying on the couch, getting her focus in check for the classes she is interested/invested in. I also put things like my make-up, my desk, and my kitchen in color as well. The desk obviously representing where most work is done, the kitchen where I have seen many others as well as myself get creative. Makeup is another place where one can let their creativity loose in a more artistic way.
3.) Limitations? What did they allow?
Since I used iMovie to edit my video, there were really not many limitations. There is such a wide range of creativity that can come from iMovie. 10/10 would recommend.
4.) What choices did you make?
As stated before I made the choice to either have a picture in color or black and white to symbolize where my mind mostly expands in my simple Rutgers apartment. What may seem like a simple stove, couch, or desk really stands for a place much more meaningful than that.
5.) What did you learn through this response?
Believe it or not I actually learned how aesthetically pleasing my place looks and how to work with simple, simple, simple camera angles.

Stephanie Zavala-Vega Week 5 Analysis
I am addressing how easy it is to forget about our surroundings, who is watching, where we are (etc). It has become so easy and customary to follow a routine, a structure of how your day is going to be and what you can expect from it. Predictability. Everyone wants to achieve this unique-ness and it is true we have different ideals/moral codes/problems but the constant of our world around us makes our predictable schedules, unpredictable. I was interested in taking pictures of just different settings I have come across, limited to what I thought looked aesthetically pleasing. I used iMovie on my mac and my iPhone camera, I did not end up editing the pictures just cropping them enough to fit nicely (some are just awkward) but they are taken with he HDR feature on iPhone cameras. Some have natural lighting like in the day photos and the night photos are used with enough light in the surroundings like street lamps. Lighting is a great tool in how these images can be processed or contextualized and I enjoy the whole idea of electricity, no one ever wants to be in the darkness, there is some light source, some may even take for granted the sunlight as the main reason for the conditioning of light as an aid instead of a reason for life, entirely. I learned that a simple photo with enough thought can be made important and into a piece of thought, in whatever setting, and for whoever, generating this idea of importance in what you do instead of caring about the end result to this big idea that can solve the worlds problem is enough to spark some inner question.
Mahdiyyah Karriem: Week 5 Analysis
In my video collage, I decided to address the theme of shaming women for their choices to be “provocative,” or openly sexual. I decided to talk about this because I don’t like the fact that people criticize others for exercising their right to do what they want. I think that all people, but specifically women are berated by unwanted opinions of others. People should have the right to express themselves how they want and I chose to celebrate them and their confidence. When I first started out with this video collage I actually had a different vision all together which surprisingly helped my process. At first I was going to make the video about Instagram models and the stigma that they faced so I made a list of names and then searched videos. Unfortunately, I couldn't find music videos with them in it. Although they weren't in it, I noticed other women who had starring roles in the music videos so I pieced together videos of them I found on youtube. As I kept listening to the song, I kept focusing on the part where Mariahlynn says, “Wait a minute, you come to my page throwing shade, and you think you better than me.” This part stuck out to me because on social media, a lot of famous women who are openly sexual on their posts receive countless amounts of negative comments criticizing their choices. I kept thinking, how could a person claim to have morals and values but continuously looks down on, and judges another person. So, long story short, I chose videos of women, some famous, some not so much and pieced it together. I chose this process of finding videos and then piecing it together because it was the easiest for me. The limitation I found with finding some of these videos was that in order for me to use the video, I would have to watch the entire thing to find maybe twenty-seconds of a scene. Although this was a limitation, it allowed me to give kind of a choppy appearance. I liked that each woman is only shown for a few seconds and then reappears throughout the entire video. One specific choice that I made was to use a song that I normally wouldn’t. I was kind of hesitant to use this song in combination with the scenes from the music videos because I was afraid that it was just to sexual. I personally am a conservative person and I don't dress risqué or anything like that so I was afraid that people would think the video represented my choices. Because it is such an explicit video, I definitely took a risk. Through making this video, I learned even more about myself. I kept rethinking my choice of video and if I should do it but it was a message I thought I needed to share. I stepped out of my comfort zone yet again and it feels great.

Patricia Cortado: Week 5 Response
I just want a peace of mind
with a piece of mine
That kind of comfort that will cost me to sigh
But nah.
Every time I get to keep you, only I get to celebrate.
No one really knows what goes on here.
So when you leave, I get to deal with it on my own.
Why do that when the whole world deserves
To know how you can light up
A whole city
Just by a simple smile?
Not the one which curves on your lips
But
The one you use to pierce through people’s souls.
Eyes.
Eyes. Eyes.
Eyes sorta see clearly now.
But
Blinded by the feathers you bring
When you flock your wings to fly to me at midnight,
I get captivated, kept, shook.
How can you just carelessly fly all around my room
Not knowing how to settle down?
It’s okay to land right here, sir.
Here we go again.
The next time you come around, I won’t bow down.
My head full of hair, no- I won’t let my crown down.
I’d look up to you as you grab my hand
To help you touch the ground now.
Comfort. Like I can just melt in your hands.
Comfort. Like I can burst into a million pieces.
Comfort. Like I can let go off the ropes that bind me together
Just so I can fall apart
Completely.
Sir, in your hands, I will.
But
Who really needs the saving here?
You know I remember that night in the spring?
You flew around me as I walked by the walls of Hub City.
But
At some point, during the trip, for a quick second,
you flew right through me.
Clipping your hands together up in the air,
Tilting your body left and right to see the right angle,
Head first, you bowed down in front of me,
And then the rest followed, not defying gravity.
Pierced right through,
Pierced right through my skin + bones.
Touched, the core of my foundation, even scraped it a little.
Oh, how that shit hurt; left me with a hole right in the middle.
Right here.
But
I liked that shit.
So, when I like that shit, I’ll do that shit.
Most would treat that wound but me?
Nah.
Ain’t no healing from that.
Right there, I knew, loving you is limitless,
Even when it hurts.
But
How can I be this clueless?
As if I get an unlimited life supply from
The spaces you’ve touched or scraped or left open
Because of some magical aura you hook on people
To always be tied by you, wanting more.
Effortless.
Addicted to a person which symptoms don’t show,
Takes 2.5 seconds to get affected and a lifetime to alleviate.
Stitches upon stitches that I get to sew,
To do nothing but embrace, not to replace nor reshape,
Here I go.
There was no “handle with care” caution around anywhere.
Fragile, I was with a hole,
Wholeheartedly, put me in your hold.
Let me the fuck in.
Sir, with you, I rest my soul.
“It’s so beautiful to know someone fully well, at their peak and at their lowest, in their nakedness, and yet, still love them.”
I just want a peace of mind with a piece of mine.
Raymond Lee-Hamlin Week 5 Analysis
1. What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
2. What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?
3. Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
4. What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
5. What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
1. Some themes and concerns I am responding to are the feelings of randomness and slight amusement. I also wanted to showcase some of my creative side (The song on my video was made by yours truly). I felt as though I needed to portray that in my response because that's how I was feeling.
2. The materials I used were also pictures I have taken or come across on the internet. I chose these because they made me laugh or made me appreciate their beauty. I also chose them because they all have some significance in my life sort of.
3. Refer to question 2 for why I used these materials and processes. They allow me to appreciate them all together in one place.
4. The chose to make my piece more happy rather than dark. I had fun making it and doing all the things that were incorporated especially the music. I decided to make the pictures this way because they are actually super lit.
5. through this response I realized that I love creating things even if its not that good. I just love doing it. I realized that about myself and that is so awesome. Thank you for this.

- I decided to respond to the prompt. I wanted to try and frame my collage more around Ariel Goldberg’s Straight Photography Gallery Tour. They took pictures of sort of random things in the street and talked about certain things in life.
- The materials used were my phone's camera, random household items, and Windows Live Movie Maker. I decided to use household items because honestly I didn't know what I was doing until I started taking the pictures and because I'm going to be doing my video project outside, so I didn't want it to be repetitive. I was more concerned with using the movie maker because I hadn't used it on my computer before. It was harder to download onto the blog until I uploaded it to Youtube.
- The limitations of using the household items was trying to get interesting photos since I am not that creative. The problem with using my phone was trying to get good quality photos. The movie maker was just hard trying to figure out how it worked.
- I just took random photos and picked the photos that related more so to what I wanted to discuss in the collage. To kind of hide a little of the low quality of my phone, and to make the pictures a little more interesting, I decided to put filters over the photos.
- I learned how to use the movie maker fofr the end of the semester project.
