WEEK 5 ANALYSIS by Jhadai McDonald
Her Mask is a short poem by Noble Smalls which I decided to interpret. Based on this week's assignment, I was prompted to film in mostly black and white because of the deep meaning that is implied by it. My film addresses the main theme in this weeks reading which is the tone of the pictures. Without even listening to the poem, I want viewers to recognize the depth of each image and what they bring to the video on a whole. To create this piece, I read a poem by an older man located on a website called, "poetry soup". I chose this website because it is a place of encouragement and growth, which is reiterated in the poet's bio. I therefore hope that my video demonstrates this philosophy. While making this video, besides filming in black and white, I wanted to use slow motion and a bit of upside-down imagery to stimulate the viewer's understanding of the piece: it is more meaningful than what one thinks it means. Finally, through this response, I've learnt more about beauty and that it is more than just outward appearance- it is skin deep.
