Uniqua Smith: Week 4 Analysis:

• What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
• What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?
• Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
• What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
• What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)

I decided to respond to the prompt. Deciding to reflect on my anger towards society for putting an unrealistic expectation for people especially because the standard for beauty is white skin, with blonde hair, and blue eyes. Most of the world looks nothing like that trying to understand this is my main point. Appropriation seems to be more of the "wave" these days. Where people of color were always deemed ugly for certain looks they possess whereas mainstream media will appropriate the same styles and features, and that's called beautiful. An example would be big lips and butts. I'm sure there are other cultures, like the Native American headdress, but I can't really speak to much on that.
The only materials I used were the readings, to understand what the prompt was about, and the internet to look up the word, belleza, which is supposed to be "beautiful" in Spanish. That's the only thing that concerns me, so hopefully that is the right word to use.
These materials just allowed me to understand the prompt. It;s limitations were that I didn't really know what was going on in the readings. They were sort of everywhere with their words, but they allowed me to think as outside of the box that I could see myself taking this.
I really wanted this to be like me talking to myself to try to understand the world, but having to raise others' spirits that might be near me, in the process. I didn't really know where I was going with it until I started just typing.
This prompt and whole process just brought to the forefront of mind what I really hate about society and what I feel society does to a lot of minorities and people that are not of the norm, which is making us feel less than we are unless we try to some how attain that beauty by changing ourselves.

Alec Monafis Week 4 Analysis

The theme I'm responding with is showing how great life is at treating most poorly. Yes life can be great at some times, but when you break everything down, it's every person for themselves. The theme is presented through the entire piece. Each and everyone on of us go through a machine. It doesn't matter what happens, we all know the ending. I was inspired by the pieces I read with different size and styles of texts. I also used the same thought process of the writers on my piece, almost talking to myself. I tried to take a new style on a manifesto from being so inspiring and positive. I was allowed to go so far in speaking my own opinion. The reader can interpret the piece in their own way, either as a lesson or a warning. I tried to make the piece go in chronological order of life and first thoughts of a young lad to an older person. I learned that everything isn't always that pretty when you take it from another perspective.

Uniqua Smith: Week 4 Response:

Beauty, BEAUTY, belleza?
Beauty comes in all shapes AND forms.
Belleza, belleza?
No clue if that's the right word to describe "IT"
I recognize it's differential beauty though.
A word that's different doesn't make the language any less beautiful.
So why doesn't the world see this.
BEAUTIFUL people exist in different ShApEs and colors.
This world is so unrecognizable sometimes
Or maybe it's so recognizable that it baffles me.
Am I the ignorant one for expecting more.
I want no, no, no. I demand more for my people, for my sisters
For those that don't recognize themselves as beautiful.
Beauty shouldn't be what we attain to be
right?...
Right!
It should be something we were born with.
Didn't your mom and dad tell you, you were beautiful, or something?
What gives anyone the right to take that feeling, that belief in who you are...what you were born with, Away.
That's not a question that's a demand.
You're beautiful.
We're beautiful and no one gets to tell us otherwise.
Society knows nothing about us, about what we've had to go though, what we've had to spend and take away from our bodies to look like,well...Beauty.
To look Beautiful.
Pam says we find beauty in ordinary things, and we do, but we're not ordinary.
Abnormal is...it's the best, it's, hmmm...
It's the most BEAUTIFUL.

Alec Monafis Week 4 Response

Ok here it is.

Enjoy your time.
But you WON'T.

Sometimes..

It doesn't make sense what goes on.
What you see is not what it may be.
What am I doing here anyway!

Show some manners. Are you dumb?
You don't go out every weekend? You don't do that?
Everyone comes first! What are you doing!
Forget about your well being.
Don't do your work! Sounds better to everyone else.
Sweet words coming out of your mouth. No one really cares.
You going to eat that?
Wow that sounds great. I REALLY DO CARE.
But I do. But you don't.
Nobody else does though.

Let's keep ourselves busy until we actually can live.
Let's sit down at a desk and do that.
All to thrive in a field, surrounded by our enemies, our friends.
Yes I like that. Now for another 40 years.
This is why we were put on this earth.
To make a profit for others before we can even profit from ourselves.

We finish our goal of a certain amount. Some do comfortably, others struggle. It's sad.
From where we began, the circle soon comes back around.
We are were we started. Naked. Questioning everything. Knowing nothing. For what?
It doesn't matter, we've moved on already.

It's always a battle, even against the closest. It shouldn't be, but it is. I don't like it.
I don't like most things but that's how humans are.
Things will never change.
That's how everyone is programmed.
Life is great.
Life sucks.

Temi Omogunloye: Week 4 Response & Analysis

Response

Remember when it was cool to smoke? When everyone, even doctors that are suppose to know whats best for your health, recommend something so dangerous.....

Remember when it became uncool to smoke? When commercial after commercial say the same thing; Don't smoke, it's bad for you. Yet at some point, you told me to do it. You said it was okay. YOU!

I suppose the next question to ask is: Who is You? The same person says "Hail him King of Kings" one day and "Crucify him!" the next, that's who. The problem with history is that those who fail to learn from it will repeat its mistake. At some point in American history, industries, backed by the government, pushed for Americans to smoke only to have it "recalled", in a sense, 60 years later because of the health risks it posed. Why was it allowed in the first place? Seriously, why was such a dangerous thing let out into the community so rampant like, advertised to make it seem safe and enjoyable (Which it is, I mean have you ever tried a cigarette) and then recalled after the damage has been done? What was the goal? Purely Financial, Couldn't be. Scenarios like these have happened in American history; where things were allowed before and now it is not, like slavery. And Yes, times change situations. But do not miss the point. Just because someone (YOU) said it was okay at some point, just because the person who happens to be saying it a Doctor, or Senator or "Massa" doesn't make it fact and most certainly doesn't make it right. Question the status quo. Question Authority. Dare to know!- Immanuel Kant

P.S. My final project for this class, even though I do not have the specifics, will involve Authority and the questioning of it!!!

Analysis
  •   What themes or concerns in the presented reading are your responding to?
    • I'm responding to the work of Discomforable writing. Even the world discomfortable is uncomfortable. I don't even think discomfortable is a word... is it? It's choppy and doesn't flow in the way our regular sentences flow but why should that be a problem?
  • What are the materials and processes you used to formulate your response? Why these? If several, which are you most concerned with?  Why these materials and processes. What are their limitations? What do they allow?
    • "Thinking is doing. Doing is thinking". It's so simple it's complicated. Thinking is doing, it is an act. Correct. Doing is thinking which is also correct but weirdly phrased.
    • "If our work does not question the terms of the status quo, it is the status quo. The murderous status quo. Our context is an avant-garde that has throughout history aligned itself with revolutionary political movements"--- Like literally everything I was talking about above. What is life.
  • What choices did you make? (For example, the tone of a piece of writing, or the lighting decisions for a photograph.) What led your decision-making about them?
    • After reading Discomfortable, and feeling it, I thought of something that does actually get you thinking. Smoking. The controversial propaganda against it, yet they were the ones who created  the problem.
  • What did you learn through this response? (You can address new knowledge or new questions you’ve gained regarding the class reading, the materials/processes you used, or both.)
    • I write so you think!

Stephanie Zavala Week 4:Analysis

  1. I am responding to the theme of time and personally how I view it along with the insignificance of money. People get consumed by money and better yet what and how much it can get you. There is an infinite continuous loop of being satisfied but never gaining an ultimate satisfaction from anything materialistic. Viewing the world in different perspectives and making a change from the problems presented.
  2. I used Pages on my mac, to finalize my thoughts after jotting down some ideas on a notes app on my phone. I enjoyed just bullet-pointing some ideas that sparked conversation in my head, or just what I like to believe works for me. On my mac I transferred the ideas and was inspired by the locomotive type of writing I vibe from the readings. I typed how I wanted to express the words to my audience (classmates) and how it felt when I was writing. I read a loud a lot of what I was typing, that explains the font usage.
  3. I wanted to keep it light because I could rant about the subject of living life and jobs. It was a summarization and my own generalization of how I feel about what life should consist of, I try to live by the rules and goals I set up and sometimes call myself out when I fall of a path but honestly its trial and error, give up and do something else, etc. I do feel since this is my first manifesto, I did not know about them and what it consisted of, I could have followed the format but through the readings, how could I?
  4. I learned about Baz Luhrmans video, thanks to the class resources. I am a huge fan of his work and sadly never came across it but I am so glad I watched it at this age and at this time, where there is competition about everything, money, job, relationships, how smart you are…etc. But life is not competitive.
